What Am I Meant To Do Today?

Our son, around the age of 7, would often come downstairs on the weekends and innocently ask, “Mom, Dad, what am I meant to do today?” This would always make us laugh a bit as we sipped our coffee, scrambling to come up with an itinerary that would fit his busy mind and energetic desires. But the more I sat and thought about his question, the more I felt the Lord working on us as a family. A God wink encouraging us to start each day with, “Lord Jesus, what are we meant to do today?” Not just on a slow Saturday, but at the start of a hectic Monday, the midweek craziness, and even into the tip of a relaxing weekend. “Lord Jesus, what are we meant to do today?”

As Gayle has so beautifully taught me, place one foot down with thank you, and the next foot down with Lord every morning when you get out of bed. Thank you for your unfailing love. Thank you for meeting me where I am today, and for guiding me through every step of my way with the gift of your Holy Spirit.

If I’m being honest, some days are harder than others for me to ask God what my day should look like. When my routine is going perfectly, with no interruptions, perfect quiet time and prayer, I feel like this is a breeze! It’s the crazy, messy, hectic days that are harder for me to see God’s plans. The days when you cannot seem to catch your breath, catch up with time, or be all the things to all the people you love serving. But that is just the lesson. When we feel the most stressed, instead of trying to control every last little thing, relax, breathe in, breathe out, and know our circumstances cannot touch the Lord’s Peace. Look up. Seek His Face. Ask Him to fill your heart with joy as you begin that crazy day or even right there in the midst of it. As His Face shines upon you, your grace will grow, your soul will strengthen. This moment will give you the peace of God’s presence here with you on Earth, but also gives you a glimpse of the ecstatic joy that rests in Heaven. I find that if I can just start my day asking Jesus to be a constant part of it, I am in continuous prayer every minute long.

One of our family’s favorite songs quotes the answer so perfectly to: Lord Jesus, what am I meant to do today? I’m meant to “love like Jesus. That kind of Grace. I want to live like I’ve got no more precious time to waste. Gonna give him Glory, with all my thanks. Cause there’s no greater, stronger, higher name, and that’s who I praise.”

Amen.
